In their first-ever full recital dedicated to their daring interdisciplinary works, Chervony|Riggen explores the intersection of premeditation and intuition. By preparing to act within the space and with each other as the space, moment, and artistic structures demand, the pair has generated a body of work which has more to deal with emergent human qualities than either’s individual discipline. In this way, the two can put on display inherent qualities within humankind that surface with genuine social play that so often are buried or taken for granted, while presenting keen statements on the nature of control, survival, and other ephemera.
David Chervony is a juggler and movement artist who performs in his native Chicago, New Orleans, New York, and beyond. After studying with Dharmesh Bhagat and Patrick McGuire, both forces in the circus community, David has taken their training and combined it with elements of performance art and experimental sound to form a unique and personal idiom. David will be working with Brian P. Daley as part of the Actor’s Gymnasium Professional Training Program to further develop his concepts. As an educator, David is currently the director of the Skokie Park District Circus Camp.
Matt Riggen is a musician/composer who works in a plurality of idioms on a plurality of instruments, but his formal training is in jazz. His training in composition is rooted in the teaching of Andy Farber and Ted Nash as part of the BMI Jazz Composers’ Workshop in NYC, and his training as a performer comes from the legendary teaching of Dr. David Baker at Indiana University. Ensembles Matt has led have received international acclaim, and Matt himself has performed in Austria and Germany professionally. As an educator, Matt is currently the Director of Music at Marquette Park on Chicago’s South Side.
